Getting Through Phuket International Airport (HKT) – Your First Phuket Experience

Whenever you travel to an “exotic” destination, the adventure really begins at the airport. Thailand is no different. Phuket International Airport is modern and efficient, but like any international arrival, there are rules, forms, and procedures you’ll want to understand before you land to ensure a smooth, stress-free arrival.

1. Entry Requirements for Thailand

Thailand’s entry requirements can feel confusing at first, especially with recent updates. Depending on your nationality and visa type, you may need to complete immigration forms, digital arrival details, customs declarations, or meet passport validity rules.

What to Prepare Before Arriving in Phuket (Thailand)

Getting Ready – Quick Checklist

  1. Thai Visa (if required)
    – Visa exemption, tourist visa, retirement visa, or long-stay visa depending on your situation

  2. Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
    – Mandatory online arrival registration completed before travel

  3. Passport Validity
    – Minimum 6 months validity remaining
    – At least one blank page for entry stamps

There may also be additional considerations such as onward travel proof or accommodation details. Being well-prepared before arrival makes passing through immigration quick and hassle-free.

2. Arrange a Few Things in Advance

Beyond entry requirements, we strongly recommend preparing the following before you arrive in Phuket:

  • It’s always a good idea to have a small amount of Thai Baht with you when you arrive. This ensures you can easily purchase a local SIM card at the airport for an initial 14- or 30-day stay and purchase your VIP express entry. If you later decide to stay longer or become a long-term resident, you can simply convert your temporary number to a permanent Thai mobile plan at any service provider.

  • Phuket does offer a VIP Express Immigration service for arrivals. The fee is typically around THB 200 per person, although this can fluctuate depending on the season and demand.  When arrival lines are particularly long — especially during high season — this service can be a helpful option to move through immigration more quickly, as standard processing times can sometimes take several hours. Some services also advertise VIP fast-track assistance online. If using these, it’s important to check legitimacy carefully before making any payment, as pricing and service quality can vary.

  • Cash access
    – Use airport ATMs to withdraw Thai Baht (THB) on arrival

  • Mobile data / eSIM
    – Set up an eSIM or Thai SIM at the airport so you’re connected immediately. This is important as the set up from your own country wont be as effective and many people suffer from lack of wifi connections. Using this method ensure you eill have wifi 24/7 and especially imprtant for apps such as Grab and Bolt 

  • Airport transfer
    – Pre-arrange private transport or hotel pickup to your accommodation

 

While Phuket airport is well organised, arrivals are often met by taxi drivers and service promoters offering transport—sometimes at inflated prices. Having your transfer arranged in advance avoids confusion and overpaying.

  • Keep digital and printed copies of your visa or visa exemption confirmation

  • Save your TDAC confirmation on your phone for easy access

  • Have your passport ready (undamaged, 6+ months validity)

    • Entry will be denied if passport validity is under 6 months

    • Damaged passports may result in refusal of entry

  • Keep your boarding pass

    • Immigration officers may ask to see it

    • If you plan to extend your stay or visa, you may need it later

  • If eligible, use the e-gates

    • Available for certain passport holders and eVisa users

After Landing at Phuket International Airport

Once you arrive at the international terminal, follow the clear signage through immigration, baggage claim, and customs. From there, you’ll exit into the arrivals hall where your transport provider, hotel representative, or pre-booked driver will be waiting.

With the right preparation, arriving in Phuket is straightforward—and your Thai island experience begins the moment you step outside into the warm tropical air.
